This type of plan was initially used by internet service providers to provide storage to their customers as an add-on service. Usually these plans do not include the full functions available with a regular, shared hosting plan and is geared toward personal or nonprofit organizations looking for cheap domain web hosting. Depending how sites are managed on each physical server, the number of web sites that are stored per server can vary significantly. Virtual hosting provides a more scalable method to supposedly store up to 5,000 domain names per server. The obvious advantages to this form of shared hosting are enhanced profit margins for web host providers. As customer needs increase, requiring more dynamic page content, enhanced security and greater share of bandwidth, an upgrade from a cheap domain web host to a dedicated or co-located resolution becomes necessary. Unlike a shared plan, these types do not share server space with other customers for security and performance reasons and come with a wider range of hosting features.
