Computer Sleep Mode:
Quicker Boot Ups and Lower Energy Usage

The great debate on computer sleep mode; whether or not to shut down a computer at the end of the day or when it's not in use for any period of time undoubtedly began with the invention of the very first computing machines and has greatly increased with the proliferation of the home computer.

Before long, home computers were soon made with a "sleep mode" option, or a low-power state of operation that was actually first created as merely a screen saver and is similar to using the pause button on your DVD or CD player.

Once more familiarly known as "suspend mode" or "stand-by mode," this lowered state of power keeps the computer and any of its open programs or windows ready to be used and accessed quickly.

Now, more so than ever before, with growing concerns over energy consumption and rapidly declining environmental conditions, many people are looking for ways of saving both energy and money with a monitor sleep mode.

And with more and more intricate programs and sophisticated software available, along with the necessary virus protection installed on computers all set to load up upon booting or turning the computer on for the first time, it's no wonder we're losing patience while waiting to get up and running again, making computer sleep mode an ideal solution.

Depending on your operating system and what's set to run after turning the machine on, it can take up to 50 times, or longer, to do a cold boot than it does to use sleep mode.

Nevertheless, with sleep mode, a simple touch of the mouse or keyboard will wake the computer from its slumber, returning it to the exact state you left it in, provided, of course, there were no software glitches, hardware malfunctions, or power outages while you were away.

If you have a laptop computer and use computer sleep mode or laptop sleep mode, which on some systems can be achieved by simply shutting the lid, be sure to have a full battery as a back-up in the case of losing power.

If your computer seems to have trouble exiting sleep mode, causing you to reboot and defeating the original purpose of being "put to sleep," check your operating system (OS) maker's website for technical support.

With some Mac operating systems such as the OS/9 and OS/9.1, the addition of certain peripherals or extensions may cause sleep mode to malfunction with users reporting they are unable to "wake up" their computers.

For configuring Macs to run sleep mode, either choose the System Preferences icon or go to Spotlight and do a search for system preferences. After clicking on the Energy Saver icon, you will then be able to adjust a slide bar, which starts with one minute and ends with never.

While a Windows computer is in sleep mode it will still be able to receive, download, and install any important updates as well as perform the routine maintenance tasks all computers need in order to remain as efficient as possible.

For computers with the Windows Vista OS, click the Start button, then Control Panel and type the word "power" in the search box that will give you access to all of the machine's power options, including where you can enter the amount of time the computer should wait before going into sleep mode.

Computer sleep mode will save both PC and MAC users a considerable amount of time waiting for their computers to reboot and give the machines some much needed "rest" while conserving power all at the same time.
