The Most Popular Linux Option: Ubuntu

You may have wondered what the most popular Linux is. You may have heard a lot about Linux as an alternative to Windows or Mac OS. However, it can also seem intimidating, especially if you have heard about the technical details involved in some distributions. However, the truth of the matter is that it does not have to be hard to run a Linux system alongside your Windows OS, or to run entirely off Linux.

The Easiest Linux Option: Ubuntu

Ubuntu is one particularly user-friendly distribution of the main Linux operating system that many Windows users really enjoy.

Here is some information about how easy Ubuntu is to help demystify the entire process and help you understand what it can and cannot do, and what you should do to get the most out of it. You do not have to be afraid of the most popular Linux!

Once you learn how Linux Ubuntu works, chances are that you will be no more intimidated by it than you are by your current operating system. After all, we are all predisposed to prefer things that we are used to doing.

There are many distributions out there, geared towards all kinds of users, which make the easiest Linux available for anyone from the hardcore programmer to the teacher to the artist. Ubuntu is very popular because it happens to be the easiest Linux to configure and install on most machines.

There are even a few subtypes of Ubuntu, such as Xubuntu - for older machines, and Eeebuntu - specifically for the eeepc.

Getting Linux Ubuntu installed on your computer is a lot easier than installing most other distributions of Linux, but like other types, you can run it side by side with another operating system. That allows your favorite OS to act as training wheels while you learn the new one.

Since it runs off a Live CD or USB equivalent, you can try the OS out before you actually commit to an install. Once you get things up and running, you may wonder what to do with it.

The answer is...anything you would do with your regular operating system.

Gaming and Software

There is not a lot of gaming support for Linux, but every other application has a version that will work on Ubuntu, and installation is a snap. Moreover, nearly every program is available at no monetary cost to you!

Just check out the repositories included with your distribution for most programs, from professional grade art programs like Krita and Gimp to word processing programs compatible with your existing Microsoft files, such as Open Office or Abiword.

If you can do it on Windows or Mac OS X, you can probably do it on the most popular Linux Ubuntu.

Learning how to do it can be tricky, though. You will need to have an administrative password to do tasks that might cause damage to your computer, and you will want to learn to use search engines to look up any problems you have.

One of the nice things about the most popular Linux community is that if you are having a problem, someone else has probably already had it, and the solution may well be on the Internet.

DOS And The Terminal

You may be instructed to do things in the terminal - that black and white text screen that is familiar to many of us who used DOS in our younger days. While the terminal can be intimidating, you should remember that it is an extremely useful tool for working with your system, and that there is usually a graphical method for doing the task, too.

That way, you have a backup if you cannot figure out the commands. You will see how easy Ubuntu is as excellent option when it comes to operating systems, and it provides a lot of functionality. Do not rule it out, no matter what you do with your computer.
