My Computer IP Address And What It Says About You.
My computer IP address is different from every other computer out there on the web. The World Wide Web is a large place, and there are many computers using it. There would be no way to identify all of those computers if it weren't for the IP address. IP stands for Internet Protocol, and every computer actually has a few IP addresses.
The first type of IP is the IP network address. This address does not broadcast to the internet, and in fact is used for internal affairs. For the most part this address is assigned by the user's router and it can be used for an Intranet, internal FTP, or even an HTTP server. The IP address that we will be discussing today however is a very different thing. You can think of my computer IP address as a telephone number. It is the number that is broadcast to the web and using this address, other computers will be able to find you. Much like a telephone number is attached to a specific telephone; my computer IP address is different for every computer. Basically it is used so that when you request a webpage, the computer knows where to send it. In this way it sort of works like your home address.
IP addresses are location based. That means you can normally tell where someone is in the world simply by getting their IP address.
Unless you are a webmaster however, you normally cannot tell what a person's IP address is. There are some steps that you can take to find out however, such as running a: netstat -I in your command prompt while someone is directly connected to your machine. If you are a webmaster, you will be able to see the IP address of every individual that is connected to your server. On that note, there was a time when all addresses were static, or in other words stayed exactly the same. This was in the eighties and promptly changed as more and more people connected to the internet. Now days these addresses are basically loaned out. In many cases the IP address will change the second you disconnect from the internet. Your network address on the other hand will most likely stay the same. For those who don't know what they look like, here are a few examples of IP addresses: Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix: woh.rr.com IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.108 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 24.217.158.70 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 This is a direct copy/paste from a command window. At the top you see the internal IP, and two spaces below that you see the internet IP. They are both very different, but they do a very similar job. These are the basics of the IP address and why my computer IP address is different for every computer. Hopefully you walk away from this article a bit smarter than before, but remember there is always more to learn!
