Ripping mp3 CD with FLAC

Ripping mp3 cd using open source software, which is usually free, is always being created and evolving. The latest audio software craze is Free Lossless Audio Codec, or FLAC.

This codec can compress your audio files without any loss of quality, and compress them more than mp3! Since it is relatively new, it is best to start with a few lessons on how to use the application.

Ripping mp3 cd, or taking music off music CD’s, is a common use among audiophiles, as they can utilize this to make mix CD’s and compilations. Finding an easy to use application for the rip audio cd is not very difficult.

Searches on the Web turn up several, and, depending on your operating system, you can most likely use your native player to do the same, i.e., Windows Media Player or iTunes.

Some free applications are out there, such as Exact Audio Copy, which can get great audio data from even the scratchiest of discs. Whatever ripper you use, be sure that the results are sent to your encoder, like the open source LAME Mp3, which converts the CD audio Wave (*.wav) format to mp3’s.

FLAC And Ripping mp3 CD

What you want, however, is to use FLAC. So, after you install your ripper, install FLAC and use the check boxes as the receiver of your ripped files. Then it will convert them. You can first convert them to mp3’s and then to FLAC, but that is just an extra step, right?

Therefore, now you have a bunch of compressed music just sitting there waiting to be heard in all their lossless glory. How do you listen to the new files?

Several media players support this kind of compression, as are many hardware devices that support burned FLAC CD’s. What you want to do is get the music burned onto CD’s in their new format. Unfortunately, most native media players do not support this function yet, but maybe soon.

A couple of free applications that work with FLAC for burning are BURRRN, BurnAtOnce, CD Wave, and dBPowerAmp CD Writer. These Windows applications install easily, and usually make it simple for ripping audio cd for the beginner.

You should always check the documentation of these applications before using them. Try them out…if they work fine and you get great sound quality, then you found your match.

Purchasable software is available that support the format, such as Roxio Easy Creator 9, or Easy CD-DA Creator, which are Windows applications. For MAC OS’s you have Toast 7 Titanium as a FLAC supporting burner.

Whatever you choose, you really do not have to be an expert audiophile to use these applications. Just try them out, check out the sound quality, make notes on their usability and function, and most of all, if they have great support and help files.

There is nothing worse than having a great application and not knowing how to use the ripping mp3 cd feature!

FLAC is not the wave of the future; it is just the next wave. Lossless compression will change with media types and applications, and Open Source will probably be the first place that develops it.
